Danny Tennaglia

Si hay un dj respetado entre los demás dj's, ése es Danny Tenaglia. Elegido en numerosas ocasiones (en distintas competiciones y por distintas revistas, entre ellas Muzik) el mejor dj del mundo, Danny Tenaglia es, sin duda, una de las leyendas de la dance music de nuestro tiempo. 

Nacido en una familia ítalo-americana en el área de Williamsburg del barrio neoyorquino de Brooklyn, Danny Tenaglia creció alimentado por los ritmos latinos, por las canciones de Sergio Mendes y por el soul de la Motown y del Philly sound que escuchaba en las calles de su barrio. 

Cuando contaba sólo con doce años, un primo suyo le regaló una cinta mezclada por Paul Cassella, el dj del Monastery Club de Queens en la que se incluían ocho temas de soul, funk y disco music. Para Tenaglia fue toda una revelación, y rápidamente llamó al teléfono que aparecía en la cassette, entrando en contacto con Paul Cassella, que le prometió que le regalaría otro mix-tape si vendía algunas copias entre sus amigos, y así es como se inició. 

En 1975, cuando tenía 15 años, logró entrar en The Loft, el club en el que pinchaba David Mancuso, y en 1977 comenzó a asistir con asiduidad al mítico Paradise Garage, donde el no menos legendario Larry Levan ejercía de dj residente. Alucinado por la atmósfera del local y rendido definitivamente a la magia que emanaba de la cabina, Danny Tenaglia decidió iniciar su carrera como dj y empezó a pinchar en el Roller Palace. 

Poco después, se trasladaría de Brooklyn a Manhattan y ocuparía la cabina del Stix o el Crisco Disco, sin dejar de acudir las noches que tenía libres a bailar a la pista del Paradise Garage, donde no se perdió casi nada entre 1979 y 1985. Fue precisamente en 1985, un poco antes de la explosión del house, cuando decidió trasladarse a Miami, porque en Nueva York había terminado la época de los grandes clubs, y ya sólo podía pinchar en pequeños bares de la zona de Brooklyn. Así que aceptó la oferta de un amigo de ejercer de dj en un club de Miami, y en poco tiempo logró convertir el Cheers en uno de los locales emblemáticos de la dance music de la ciudad a base de mezclar los primeros hits del house que venían de Chicago con la onda Salsoul y los vinilos de los sellos Prelude o West End que sirvieron de puente entre la disco music y el house. 

En Miami fue también donde produjo su primer tema, "Waiting for a call", editado con el nombre de Deep State en la compañía Atlantic Records, y al que seguirían otros maxis publicados con los nombres de The Look o Code 718. Fue en esa época también cuando remezcló junto a Ralph Falcón (más tarde, en Murk) el hit italiano "Found Love" de Double Dee. 

Pero en 1990, cansado ya de Miami, se volvió para Nueva York, que por entonces volvía a contar con una escena de clubs. Masters At Work, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales y Junior Vasquez habían vuelto a ondear la bandera de la dance music en la Gran Manzana. A su vuelta colaboró junto a su amigo Peter Daou en diversas producciones house, y comenzó a pinchar en clubs como el mítico Sound Factory, la cuna del underground house, compartiendo su cabina con estrellas de la talla de "Little" Louie Vega, Tony Humphries o Junior Vasquez, el dj residente del club. 

En 1991 publicó el influyente maxi "Harmonica Track" con el nombre de Soulboy, un evocador tema de blues-house que inauguró a partir de entonces todo un entramado de interrelaciones entre el jazz y el house. Durante los años 90, la carrera de Danny Tenaglia como productor ha estado ligada a los sellos Tribal y Twisted, con los que ha publicado una serie de maxis y dos álbumes ("Hard & Soul" en el 95 y "Tourism" en el 98), que en gran medida han definido, junto a las producciones de Murk, Deep Dish o Mood II Swing, el sonido house de la década. 

Ritmos tribales, frecuencias groovies, guiños a la disco music y el jazz y voces en la onda garage, son sus señas de identidad, que se mantuvieron también en su segundo álbum, "Tourism", en el que contó con la colaboración de Celeda, Cevin Fisher o Liz Torres. 

Entre uno y otro disco, tuvo lugar su famosa ruptura con su antiguo amigo Junior Vasquez. Sucedió en el club Tunnel de Nueva York, donde pinchaba Vasquez, quien hizo que un matón expulsara del club a Danny, que se encontraba bailando en la pista. ¿La razón?. Vasquez dice que Danny había ido a espiarle y a tomar apuntes para después copiarle. Pero Tenaglia dice que se debió únicamente a la envidia que le tenía por estar de residente en el Twilo, el club que ocupó el local del Sound Factory, del que Junior Vasquez había sido celoso dj residente. Curiosamente, más tarde se invirtieron las tornas, y Vasquez pasaría a ocupar la cabina del Twilo, y Tenaglia la del Tunnel. 

Danny ha trabajado en algunos de los mejores clubs del mundo, como el Ministry of Sound y el Home en Londres, o el Space en Ibiza. Danny Tenaglia suele tocar con seis canales abiertos: dos para los vinilos, dos para CDs y dos para efectos sonoros. Su mezcla de progressive techno, tribal beats, frecuencias ácidas y house oscuro, profundo y sensual, posee una efectividad absoluta y logra crear un estado de hipnosis total en el espectador. 

Añádase que ha remezclado a los más grandes (de Madonna a Ten City, pasando por Jamiroquai, Grace Jones y Pet Shop Boys), ha creado su propio sello (Sexy) y que ha editado la colección más brillante de CD-mixes de la que se tiene noticia, y se obtendrá la figura del dj más admirado del momento.
